This is the supplementary material of the manuscript titled "A science-based heuristic to guide sector-level SDG investment strategy".

Two files relating to the abovementioned article are included.

1) The "Supplementary_material.pdf" includes methodological details of the manuscript (e.g. selection process of articles), supporting information for the analysis on Causal Loop Diagrams and additional figures.

2) The "Supplementary_material_dataset.csv" contains the causal mechanisms of impacts (see ‘Abbreviated_mechanism’ variable) and the details of the publication from which the mechanism is extracted. The publications included in the dataset were retrieved from Google Scholar, for more information see "Supplementary_material.pdf". A description of the dataset variables is provided below:

SDGx_Sectory: the SDG-sector combination. Letter ‘x’ refers to number 1:16 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGx) and letter ‘y’ refers to economic sectors 1:81. For information on economic sectors included, see "Supplementary_material.pdf".

Author(s): authors of the publication. ‘No result’ indicates that no reliable or scientific data was found on the mechanisms and impacts of sectors on the SDGs. ‘Expert judgement’ indicates that an important consideration was missing in the literature and the information under the ‘Abbreviated_mechanism’ variable was included by the authors of this paper.

Title: title of the publication. ‘No result’ indicates that no reliable or scientific data was found on the mechanisms and impacts of sectors on the SDGs. ‘EJ’ indicates that an important consideration was missing in the literature and the information under the ‘Abbreviated_mechanism’ variable was included by the authors of this paper.

Publication: journal name or publication outlet. Empty cell means no information on this variable was found. See above for ‘No result’ and ‘EJ’.

Volume: volume of the publication. See above for ‘No result’, ‘EJ’ and empty cells.

Number: volume number of the publication. See above for ‘No result’, ‘EJ’ and empty cells.

Year: year article was published. See above for ‘No result’, ‘EJ’ and empty cells.

Publisher: publishing office. See above for ‘No result’, ‘EJ’ and empty cells.

DOI_or_link: Digital Object Identifier or link associated with the publication. See above for ‘No result’, ‘EJ’ and empty cells

Abbreviated_mechanism: a brief description of the causal mechanism of impact, capturing how a specific economic sector (Y) impacts a specific SDG (X). ‘No result’ indicates that no reliable or scientific data was found on the mechanisms and impacts of sectors on the SDGs. Where ‘(EJ)’ is inserted at the end of the mechanism, it indicates that an important consideration was missing in the literature and the information under the ‘Abbreviated_mechanism’ variable was included by the authors of this paper.
