Mayotte, entre mémoire et histoire
This presentation explores the historical revolts that have shaped the island of Mayotte, from the colonial period to its recent departmentalization. It highlights the complex tensions between local memory and national narratives, examining key figures such as Bakari Koussou, grassroots movements like the “chatouilleuses,” and the framing of contemporary political discourse. Drawing on historical and journalistic sources, the talk offers a critical perspective on the construction of competing national stories in Mayotte and the Comoros, while shedding light on the island’s unique geopolitical position. It challenges stereotypes, contextualizes past and present social struggles, and engages with the memorial and political stakes surrounding Mayotte’s integration into the French Republic. This historical approach aims to reveal the entangled legacies of colonization, regional migration dynamics, and ongoing identity negotiations in the Indian Ocean. The resource consists of a written presentation as well as a video recording.
