This talk was presented as a Breakout Session of invited papers at the 39th UKSG Annual Conference and Exhibition in Bournemouth, UK, April 11-13, 2016.

The session abstract: What are the key drivers behind the dramatic growth in library-based publishing? This session explores differences and similarities through two case studies from different countries; Sweden, the UK. The presenters will describe the forces that are changing the roles of their parent libraries and show how these are also shaping the nature of their publishing programs. They will also discuss some of the opportunities they see for the future of libraries as publishers and challenges these new entrants are encountering. 

The session also included a presentation by Simon Bains, from Manchester University Library.

The talk described in this presentation (see speaker notes at the end) touches upon the strategic drivers for Stockholm University Press when publishing peer-reviewed Open Access books and journals, in relation to the strategies for Stockholm University. The governing principles for the press are openness, non-profit, quality and rigour of evaluation processes and to publish for and by researchers. The presentation also shows some results, including usage statistics, from the books and journal articles we have published so far. Lastly. we talk about the challenges and opportunities being a library publisher in the current and future scholarly communication landscape.
