This report details a pedagogical development project in social studies teacher

education for grades 4-6. It addresses challenges among students in identifying and

utilizing concepts as part of subject understanding and effectively approaching teaching

and learning in civic and religious education.

The purpose of the project was to develop, test, and systematically evaluate the

development of students’ understanding of subjects–and transforming this knowledge into

planning for understanding. Thus, the aim was to enable future teachers to select subject

content in civic and religious education, and link that to teaching and learning through

central ideas and concepts. Three core concepts were used: goals of understanding ,

concepts and examples .

Main design-principles of the course were using the same principles taught (goals,

concepts, examples) in our own teaching of the course, and provide plenty of practice

opportunities and utilizing responsive teaching.

The study used pre- and post-tests in order to map students understanding of the core

concepts. The test included students general reasoning, as well as a scenario where they

were to develop planning from an AI-generated text. 40 students completed pre- and post-

tests.

The results show clear positive changes: no negative development was observed, and a

significant majority of students improved their lesson planning. Many students changed

their conception from general views of planning to using subject specific goals of

understanding, relevant concepts and examples, as well as gaining confidence and a deeper

understanding of principles for teaching and learning. This highlights the effectiveness of

using this clear support structure and concept-based teaching.
